Huey, partner win doubles

Philippine Davis Cupper Treat Huey and British partner Dominic Inglot completed their glorious week by downing third seed Scott Lipsky and David Martin of the United States, 5-7, 7-6 (2), 10-8, to capture the Levene, Goulding & Thomson Tennis Challenger doubles crown Monday in Binghamton, New York.

Huey and Inglot, who both played for the University of Virginia varsity squad, dropped the opening set but recovered their bearing in the second frame to dispatch their rivals.

Aside from earning 80 Association of Tennis Professional (ATP) ranking points, Huey and Inglot halved the top prize of $3,100 prize.

It was the second straight doubles crown for Huey and Inglot after reigning in the $75,000 Vancouver Challenger in Canada last week against Americans Ryan Harrison and Jesse Levine, 6-4, 7-5.

The tandem also competed in three Challengers last month in Granby in Canada, Kentucky and California but only made it as far as the semifinals in one of the tournaments.

The victory also pushed Huey’s ATP doubles rankings to a career-high of No. 106 from No. 112 last week. Inglot, for his part, jumped four notches to No. 120.

The Fil-American Huey started this year’s ATP campaign in January at No. 144.

Huey and Inglot threaded their way through the finals after stunning top seed Coling Fleming and Ken Skupski of Great Britain, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5), in the semifinals, fourth pick Adam Hubble of Australia and Harsh Mankad of India, 6-4, 7-6 (6) in the quarters, and singles champion Kei Nishikori and fellow Davis Cupper Go Soeda of Japan, 6-3, 4-6, 10-3, in the first round.

This is good news for the Philippine tennis community, Treat Huey won the 50K Challenger Levene, Goulding & Thomson Tennis Challenger in New York. As reported It was the second straight doubles crown for Huey and Inglot after reigning in the $75,000 Vancouver Challenger in Canada last week.

Huey is preparing for the Asian Games this november alongside with 3 time sea games gold medalist Cecil Mamiit.
